This module aims to develop learner knowledge of how critical theory and philosophical ideas are developed and used to discuss contemporary art and visual culture. The module expands the learners’ critical vocabulary around the interpretation of contemporary art and culture. Learners’ will examine different interpretative strategies such as semiotics, psychoanalytic theory, discourse analysis and audience studies. The module shows how artists are often in conversation with cultural theories such as concepts of the gaze, spectatorship, the politics of representation, embodied knowledges, feminist and queer art studies, race and postcolonialism.
