Module Description: 1. To provide experience to learners in an on-campus student-led clinic, dealing with real patients with neuromusculoskeleatal injuries including assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of same.
2. To prepare learners for a career in athletic therapy private practice via engagement with the scope of professional practice, ethics and business considerations.
3. To provide learners with the opportunity to consolidate theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in a supervised work placement.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Having gained experience in the student led-clinic, learners will we able to assess, treat and rehabilitate a wide range of neuromusculoskeletal injuries in patients in different contexts.
LO2 Having gained experience in the student-led clinic, learners will be able to set goals for treatment and for outcomes, demonstrate and implement pertinent clinical reasoning, and develop and foster therapeutic relationships with patients.
LO3 Having gained experience in the student-led clinic, learners will have some understanding of the day-to-day running of a clinic and be able to document and keep medical records.
LO4 Plan and prepare for pitchside duties, including preparation of a kitbag, and execution of pre, during and post training and match duties.
LO5 Recognise and understand the scope of professional practice of athletic therapists and discuss the socio-political context in Ireland within which they will practice as certified athletic therapists.
LO6 Discuss the code of ethics and professional conduct and appreciate common ethical dilemmas faced by athletic therapists.
LO7 Conceptualise themselves post-graduation in terms of self employment in the private sector. Prepare in terms of business plan, finance application, job application and personal branding.
LO8 Having completed work placement, learners will have honed skills of assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of a wide range of patients with differing injuries
LO9 Having completed work placement, learners will have real world experience with managing patient caseloads, development of critical skills in goal setting, problem prioritisation, patient communication, and treatment justification.
LO10 Having completed work placement learners will have an understanding of the day-to-day running of a clinical practice, and been able to identify possible future employment opportunities.

Indicative Content
Professional Practice
Context and history of the profession in Ireland Professional bodies Scopes of professional practice for ARTI and similar professions Code of ethics, ethical dilemmas Developing your practice philosophy and personal brand Preparing for setting up a small business, seeking finance, job applications.
Clinical studies in the Student-led clinic
Exposure to patients with different neuroMSK injuries Skill, competency and safe use of a wide range of treatment and rehabilitation techniques Consolidation and practical implementation of skills learned in co-semester assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and clinical reasoning modules. Management of patient caseloads, goal setting and discharge planning. Medical records documentation Communication skills in therapeutic relationships with patients, and with peers, staff and multidisciplinary teams.
Pitchside
Attending pre-planned sports team training sessions and matches, under the supervision of a nominated qualified therapist. Planning and preparing kitbag. Observing and involvement of pre, during and post match duties.
Work Placement
The work placement module will normally involve 475 Hours, split typically into 14 weeks of roughly 35 hours per week in appropriate clinical placement centres. Practical clinical experience is gained in: • Evaluation and diagnosis of neuromusculoskeletal injuries • The use of therapeutic modalities in the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal injuries. • Therapeutic exercise prescription and rehabilitation. On-site learning through observation, guided treatment, co-ordinated rehabilitation and progression to independent evaluation and rehabilitation of patient caseloads, under the supervision of an appointed clinical instructor.

Depending on what potion of this module is failed, reassessment will vary.
For CA element it will be coursework only.
For Theory exam in professional practice it would be repeat examination.
For failed practical, failed clinical (student-led) studies and failed work placement hours, it would be repeat the module.
