Module Description: This module introduces students to a range of contemporary and historical Irish artists and designers whose work responds to site-specific locations, histories and cultures. It seeks to develop research skills, written and verbal articulacy and to encourage an environment of discussion and informed critical awareness inspired by place-based public art both in Ireland and internationally. The relationship between histories of landscape and histories of geographies are also contextualised in this module. Students are invited to consider how contemporary place-based artists address current socio-ecological issues today through their collaborations with urban, rural and marginalized communities.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO4 Communicate an understanding of the role curators play in protecting and managing art and design work in the public realm through writing, group discussion and presentation.
LO5 Demonstrate an understanding of the significance of art and design to the tourism, heritage and public realm sectors in Ireland through presentation, group discussion and essay writing.

Indicative Content
An introduction to Site-specific and Public Art.
This module presents a comprehensive survey of key national and international artists who mediate culture and heritage through their creative practice. It will focus in particular on art that responds to site-specific locations, histories and cultures. It seeks to develop research skills, written and verbal articulacy and to encourage an environment of discussion and informed critical awareness inspired by place-based public art both in Ireland and abroad. This module encourages students to explore the ways in which site-specific and public art practices have contributed to the construction of identity and memory in the 20th and 21st Century. Students are also invited to consider how contemporary place-based artists address current socio-ecological issues through collaborations with urban, rural and marginalized communities.

Assessment Description
A written analysis of an Irish art work. This essay must address the social and cultural context the work. The essay must demonstrate an understanding of the significance the work plays in the tourism and event management sector in Ireland as well as making a case for its conservation and protection.

Exam Board
It is at the discretion of the Examination Board as to what the qualifying criteria are.
Reassessment Description
Marks for essays and presentations are collected at the end of the semester. If a student fails to complete an essay, re-assessment can take place if the student obtains the agreement of the tutor to submit completed work at the end of the semester. If a student fails to make a presentation then a written assignment should be set instead.
