Module Description: During the work placement period, students are based in either hospital, community or industry. This opportunity for practice based learning allows them to develop the core competencies required by pharmacy technicians from entry level to practice.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Focus on the technical aspects of the prescription, the gathering of patient information for the pharmacist to review, product preparation, product distribution and inventory control;
LO2 Assume responsibility for their own actions, be accountable to the public and contribute to the overall functioning of the pharmacy to ensure a safe and healthy environment.
LO3 Practice in accordance with legislation, professional standards, guidelines and/or policies
LO4 Work very closely with the pharmacist in order to achieve optimal drug therapy outcomes for the patient
LO5 Collaborate with each other and members of the health care team and broader circle of care, act as mentors to promote the growth and development of the profession and commit to lifelong learning.

Work Placement
Students must work 832 hours June to December in hospital, community or a combination of both. Students have the option to complete a maximum of 320 hours outside of Ireland or in the pharmacy industry.

Students are required to develop a work placement portolio which consists of:
Placement Diary
Placement Presentation
Research Poster
Diary Exercises
Competency Sheets
Tutor Sheets
These will provide an evidence base that the student has achieved and understood the core competencies required from a pharmacy technician.

It is at the discretion of the Examination Board as to what the qualifying criteria are.
Reassessment Description
Students may be required to work extra placement hours or repeat work placement hours if they do not reach the required standards of core competencies. Feedback will be sought from the Work Placement tutor.

Discussion Note: Work Placement Coordinator is allocated one timetabled hour per practical group for this module. This time is used for student sessions in relation to understanding work placement, liaising with pharmacy tutors, one to one meetings with students, coordinating with IT Carlow Careers Services and engaging with the pharmacy industry.
Work placement posters are presented at the annual conference of National Association of Hospital Pharmacy Technicians.
Presentations are shared with first year pharmacy technicians in Semester 1.
Job fairs, industry visits, CV and interview workshops are all included in this module and take place during semester 2.
