Introduction to Childhood Development
• What is development? • Using scientific approaches to observe and analyse behaviour • Lifespan development - impacts of early development on later behaviour and mental processes • Bronfenbrenner's ecological model
Biological, psychological and social influences
• Prenatal development • Socioemotional development - attachment, parenting • Family structures • Care outside the home
Developing a sense of self in a social context
• Emotional development - social referencing • Self-awareness: Self-concept and self-esteem • Sex and Gender identity • Ethnicity and culture • Relating to others
Cognitive Development
• Perception - visual, auditory, intermodal • Theory of mind • Cognitive development theories
