Module Description: The aims of this module are :

• To familiarise students with the implications of the Building Control Act and the Building Regulations, so that they can incorporate these requirements into Studio 2 projects and demonstrate compliance.
• To familiarise students with’ legal minimum’ and ‘best practice’ approaches to their Studio 2 projects
• To familiarizse learners with the Project Team and the role and responsibilities of the Architectural Technologist, with reference to the RIAI Knowledge, Skill and Competence for Practice as an Architectural Technologists 2010 and the CIAT Code of Conduct
• To introduce learners to the construction procurement process, including alternative construction procurement methods; and to construction costing and project procedure.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Apply the Building Regulations to a small or medium scale concrete construction project
LO2 Undertake a FSC/Fire Safety audit of an existing building and prepare documentation for a DAC Application for a small to medium scale construction project
LO3 Demonstrate familiarity with basic construction procurement methods, project stages and project procedures
LO4 Demonstrate familiarity with the Construction Project Team and the role and responsibilities of the Architectural Technologist as a member of this team, as required under current legislation and professional standard
LO5 Demonstrate familiarity with basic construction cost planning & the factors influencing construction cost

Indicative Content
Overview
The Building Control Act & Regulations and the Technical Guidance Documents, both in general and as they apply to Studio II projects. The Building Control Processes, as established under current legislation, e.g. SI 9/BC(A)R 2014, and with reference to Fire Safety Certificate applications. The Construction Procurement process; alternative construction procurement methods. Introduction to construction cost. The role and responsibilities of the Architectural Technologist, with reference to the RIAI Knowledge, Skill and Competence for Practice as an Architectural Technologist and the CIAT Code of Conduct. The Construction Project Team, including construction project procedures and project stages.
