Module Description: This module aims to give students the knowledge, skills and competencies required to deliver optimal pharmacy - based services to patients with respiratory conditions including allergies, across a range of pharmacy contexts.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Outline and explain the pathology of a range of respiratory conditions including asthma, COPD, rhinitis and other allergic conditions.
LO2 Describe the drugs used to manage a range of respiratory conditions, including mode of action, side effects and drug interactions. Compare treatment options and explain the relevance and application of international treatment guidelines.
LO3 Review and assess typical pharmacy patient medical records and dispense relevant prescriptions safely and efficiently, under the supervision of a pharmacist.
LO4 Outline and discuss non-drug measures relevant to the management of respiratory conditions.
LO5 Describe and apply a range of communication techniques, including consultation skills, coaching skills and motivational interviewing and evaluate their effectiveness in a range of pharmacy settings, to promote behaviour change, as appropriate, and to optimise medicine management in this therapeutic field.

Indicative Content
Clinical.
Pathology, signs, symptoms, diagnosis and management (both pharmacological and non-pharmacological) of a ranges of conditions affecting the respiratory system, including (but not limited to) asthma, COPD and cystic fibrosis. Identification and management of allergic reactions.
Health promotion
Factors which can influence risk of developing respiratory disease. Emphasis on smoking cessation.
Communication Skills
Coaching and consultation skills. Motivational interviewing techniques. Inhaler/device technique.

Continuous assessment will also include review of case studies, completion of practical work sheets. Students will be required to demonstrate mastery of a range of practical skills (as well as theoretical knowledge) during practical classes.
